How to Get Rid of Infant Hiccups

When a baby gets hiccups, it can be caused by the development of the baby's organs and/or too much air in the lungs. There are a few ways to help the baby deal with the hiccups, but it is impossible to prevent them from occurring. Hiccups will last up to 15 minutes. Once a baby gets hiccups, the following steps will help get rid of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Burp the baby. Burping is done when you lean the baby against your shoulder and gently pat the baby's back until a few burps come out. A baby can take in too much air while eating and it could cause hiccups. Burping can help the baby get rid of the hiccups.

    • 2

Continue feeding. Babies who burp while drinking formula can still continue drinking. Check the nipple to make sure that the opening is not too big. A nipple that has a large opening can make the baby get too much air at one time, making hiccups occur.

    • 3

Distract the baby with hiccups. If the baby suddenly gets hiccups, you can help them get rid of the hiccups sooner by playing with them.

    • 4

Wait for the hiccups to go away. Infant hiccups can disappear within 15 minutes if you choose to wait it out. Babies do not realize they have hiccups and it doesn't cause them any pain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not panic once your baby gets hiccups. It is a natural occurrence.
