How to Become an Indian Model
In India, a country with 1.1 billion people, it can be extremely difficult to break into the modeling industry. But those Indians who do make it are in good company. From 1990 to 2000, four of the Miss World title winners were from India, as were two of the Miss Universe title winners. Ultimately, the real question is whether an aspiring model in India has what it takes---physically, mentally and spiritually---to achieve and thrive in the industry. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Be honest with yourself and decide how you want to market yourself within the context of Indian modeling. Most Indian models have a "wheatish" or lighter skin tone and light brown, hazel, or green eyes. People from Kashmir tend to have some of the ideal features.
-
2
Decide on your immediate and long-term modeling goals. For example, is your goal to have your hand featured in a magazine, do you want to be an anchor on NDTV, or do you want to break into the Bollywood industry? Long, slender hands may feature well in a magazine, a studious-looking person with a journalism background might make it as an anchor, and a person with striking, attractive features might be more suitable for film (e.g. think about how Amitabh Bachchan was not just viewed as handsome initially, but was able to use his particular eyes to become an "angry man" character whose body always gave off a particular image).

3
Pose in front of a mirror, friends, family members or even strangers as a means of understanding how you express yourself and how others respond to your methods of self-expression. Indian models especially tend to be very expressive---what the Western world calls "melodrama" is a norm in Indian fashion and entertainment.

4
Review and learn from the methods, stories, and style behind India's top models. Aishwarya Rai, the 1994 recipient of the Miss World title, initially wanted to be an architect, not a model. Yet, her features figured so prominently in a single photo shoot that stardom followed.

5
Visit the fashion hubs of India, especially India's glowing Bollywood metropolis, Mumbai. In Mumbai---particularly around the Andheri, Bandra West, and Film City areas---you will find the contacts that you need to break into the industry.
