How To Make LimeWire Connect Faster

With peer-to-peer (P2P) software coming and going, LimeWire remains one of the most popular P2P programs. It is a preferable source to search and download free music and other files shared by peers. Downloading an MP3 is as easy as launching the program, typing a search and waiting for any relevant results. When the desired results are found, downloading is just a few clicks away and after some waiting, the new music is ready for playing. What separates users from the music is the waiting time that it takes to download the file. This varies depending on the speed of the Internet connection and the size of the download. You can, however, make LimeWire connect faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest version of LimeWire (free) or LimeWire Pro ($34.95 for one year, as of November 2009). Using the latest version ensures stability and best performance when the network is used.

    • 2

Close all applications that use the Internet connection. Doing this lets the computer focus all of the connection resources on LimeWire, which will give a boost to the download speed.

    • 3

Make sure that there are no uploads going on while you are running LimeWire.

    • 4

Check the "My Files" area by clicking the first button on the toolbar that looks like a green folder. Check your Public and Private Shared folders for any tracks of the files that you have previously downloaded or are actively sharing.

    • 5

Remove all the files from the list by clicking the "X" on the far right of each MP3. This will prevent them from being shared, making it impossible to upload to other peers thus improving the download speeds.

Tips & Warnings

  • 1. You can move all of your downloaded MP3s to another folder if you desire. To find out where your shared folder is, go to your Public and Private Shared folders, right click on an MP3 and click "Locate on Disk." All the files shown there are being shared. Move them elsewhere and your existing downloads should be faster.

  • 2. If you don't want your downloaded files to be instantly shared after they are completed, go to the "Tools" menu and then "Options." In the "My Files" tab, uncheck the box labeled "Add files I download from P2P Users to my Public Shared List."

  • 3. Using LimeWire Pro is recommended as it makes greater use of your faster connections by offering "turbo-charged" downloads.
