Instructions

    • 1

Choose a design to paint on your box. Personalize it for the person in mind such as letters and numbers or maybe even a name for a child. Choose a flower pattern for a grown woman or stripes for a man.

    • 2

Sand the entire outside surface of the box to rough it up a little and help the paint adhere. Wipe off the box with a rag to remove all traces of sawdust.

    • 3

Pick your colors of paint. Make sure all the colors you choose coordinate with each other and fit with your chosen design.

    • 4

Decide which color you want for your base. Pour that color onto a Styrofoam plate.

    • 5

Paint the entire outside of the box with a base color using one of your larger paintbrushes. Use a painter's comb to add texture while the paint is still wet if desired. Allow the base coat to dry for several hours to overnight.

    • 6

Draw your chosen design on a regular sheet of paper, cut out your design or print out a copy.

    • 7

Cut a piece of carbon paper to fit the cover of the box. Make sure the carbon side is on the top of the box.

    • 8

Place your design on top of the carbon paper. Use the pointed end of the paintbrush to trace the design. Press firmly to transfer the design to the top of your box. Look carefully under the carbon paper every once in a while to make sure the design is transferring.

    • 9

Remove all the paper from the top of the box.

    • 10

Squirt your desired paint colors on a Styrofoam plate. Use the paint and paintbrushes to fill in the outline of the design on the top of your box. Make sure to rinse off your brush in a cup of water before going to the next color of paint. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

    • 11

Spray on a clear coat to protect your painted surface.

    • 12

Cut pieces of felt to fit the inside of your box. Make sure to cut pieces for the sides, the top and the bottom.

    • 13

Glue the pieces of felt into the box. Let the glue dry completely before placing a gift in the box, such as jewelry, small toys or other trinkets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a hot glue gun to attach decorations to the outside of your box, such as wooden letters or shapes, pictures or plastic jewels.
