How to Patent a Book
You cannot patent a book. A book is copyrighted the moment it is created. The owner of the copyright is the creator of the work, unless he or she transfers the copyright. It isn't necessary to register with the United States Copyright Office to obtain the full right of copyright protection, but registering your work with the United states Copyright Office provides you with proof of copyright date should you ever need it to take someone to court for stealing your work.

Visit the United States Copyright Office online. Click on "Electronic Copyright Office" under "How to Register." Read the eCO online system documents provided. It isn't necessary, but reading these documents answers many of the questions you might have about copyright protection.

Click the link for form CO. This form replaces all of the separate forms that used to be needed for various types of intellectual property. The form will open in .PDF. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 or higher to fill out the CO form.

Complete the CO form, print it out, then mail it to the United States Copyright Office at the address given on the form. You will need to send a copy of the work along with the form. The U.S. Copyright Office will keep the form on file as well as a record of your date of registration. the form will ask for basic information regarding the name of the book, your name, type of work and description of work.
