How to Numb Your Ears
Ear numbing reduces the pain associated with piercing. Jewelers use topical gels or sprays containing lidocaine or pricolaine to create numbness before inserting an earring with a piercing gun. Home remedies for numbing include the use of ice or very cold water. A quick piercing is virtually painless once the portion of the ear to be pierced begins feeling numb.

Tips & Warnings
Never use a topical numbing agent that contains lidocaine or prilocaine unless it was specifically prescribed for you by a doctor.
Avoid an overdose of prescription topical agents by only using as much as necessary to make the skin numb.
Do not use lidocaine or prilocaine while nursing, or if you have methemoglobinemia. Carefully discuss all known health conditions with your doctor before accepting a prescription for lidocaine or prilocaine.
