How to Numb Your Ears

Ear numbing reduces the pain associated with piercing. Jewelers use topical gels or sprays containing lidocaine or pricolaine to create numbness before inserting an earring with a piercing gun. Home remedies for numbing include the use of ice or very cold water. A quick piercing is virtually painless once the portion of the ear to be pierced begins feeling numb.

Instructions

    • 1

Numb ears with a prescription topical agent. Clean and rinse the ear thoroughly with soap and water. Apply gels with a cotton swab; use the spray pump for liquid sprays. Consult the prescription insert for directions on how much to use and how long to wait for numbness to occur. Follow all additional directions of the prescribing physician.

    • 2

Numb ears with cold water. Use soap and water to clean the ear. Dip a cotton swap into very cold water. Hold on ear for 30 to 40 seconds to achieve numbness.

    • 3

Use ice to numb ears. Wash and rinse the ear with soap and water. Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel with one side exposed. Hold the exposed ice against the portion of the ear to be pierced for 30 to 40 seconds, or until it begins feeling numb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use a topical numbing agent that contains lidocaine or prilocaine unless it was specifically prescribed for you by a doctor.

  • Avoid an overdose of prescription topical agents by only using as much as necessary to make the skin numb.

  • Do not use lidocaine or prilocaine while nursing, or if you have methemoglobinemia. Carefully discuss all known health conditions with your doctor before accepting a prescription for lidocaine or prilocaine.
