How to Escape From a Knife Attack

Highly dangerous and rarely anticipated, a sudden attack from a knife-wielding opponent can be a nightmarish situation. However, with some cunning and clear thinking, you will be capable of both preparing yourself for physical assault and mentally arming yourself for an effective self-defense response. Remember: the most vital thing in any combat situation is your survival, and many aggressive situations can be mitigated by planting a knee or foot in your attacker's groin before running away.

Instructions

    • 1

Put as much distance as possible between you and your attacker's weapon. Back up from your opponent and utilize any nearby objects to either arm yourself or block the path between you and your attacker.

    • 2

Kick any time your attacker draws near to keep him at a distance, making sure not to lose your balance or overextend at any point. Attempt a sudden kick to the groin as soon as possible--regardless of the gender of your attacker--and run away if the blow connects.

    • 3

Prepare for a charge from your attacker. Look for any exits and physically prepare to run once you have a free opportunity. If you have mace or any other weapon available (car keys can also work if applied between the knuckles) mentally locate it and wield it in as inconspicuous a way as possible.

    • 4

Attempt to talk your opponent down, telling him that you mean him no harm, that he can stop his illegal action now, that you apologize for any grievance, that you will give him your money, etc. Keep in mind that most attacks with a weapon are made by individuals in a desperate and/or malicious mindset who may be impervious to communication.

    • 5

Fall to the ground if your opponent charges and run forward at a 45-degree angle to the left or right of your opponent. Make for the exit and run towards a crowd of people or public space without stopping.

    • 6

Face your opponent in hand-to-hand combat. Physically deflect their knife hand with a kick or well-timed trap with a free hand, applying a firm punch, kick or mace attack to the face, groin or other vital spot. Disarm your opponent by slamming his hand against a hard surface or applying force to the wrist, and deliver as debilitating a blow as you can to give you time to run away. Note: this tactic is a last resort and can only be timed using sheer concentration and intuition, preferably with the aid of experience and skill.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is generally advisable that all individuals--particularly women--receive basic training in self-defense. If you are concerned about potential danger to your person or can foresee any violent encounter, contact the police and seek immediate law enforcement help.
