How to Transit Through the USA With a Visa
In order to travel across the United States, laws regarding visas must be carefully followed. Failure to comply can result in jail time and deportation back to the traveler's country of origin. Citizens of some countries do not need a visa to visit or transit the United States. These individuals will need a passport that is compliant with current standards for electronic passports.
Things You'll Need
- Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-156 OR Form DS-160
- Passport valid for travel to the United States, with at least 6 months until expiration
- One (1) 2x2 photograph
- Sufficient funds for trip
- Proof of foreign residence, and intent to return to said residence.
- If a citizen of a state sponsor of terrorism:
- Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-157

Apply for a Visa

Go to a United States Embassy or Consulate, with Form DS-156 or Form DS-160, your passport and a 2-by-2 inch photograph.

Take your forms, photograph and passport to the consular officer.

Arrange an interview.

Pay the application fee. For most transit visas, this will be $131 as of 2009. In some cases, there will be no application fee.

Your interview will require a return to the consulate or embassy. Bring your passport with you.

During the interview, your fingerprints will be taken using a digital, ink-free process.

If you are accepted for a transit visa, fees will be due, if any. This is rarely required.
