How to Construct a Wedding Arch
A beautiful wedding arch can add a great deal to an otherwise common ceremony. But wedding arches can be expensive if purchased ready-made. The good news is, you can build one yourself easily and inexpensively. Making your own wedding arch can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, depending on how you choose to decorate it. Here are some basic directions for constructing your own wedding arch, with some tips on how to personalize it for the husband-and-wife-to-be.
Things You'll Need
- Heaviest gauge wire
- Fine gauge wire
- Wire cutters
- Pliers (optional)
- Decorations of your choice, including ribbons, fabric, balloons, foliage, flowers, photos, etc.
Instructions
-
Create a Base for Your Arch
-
1
Decide whether your arch will be inside or outside.
-
2
If it will be outside, it can be installed directly into the ground by putting the ends of the wire deep into the ground.
-
-
3
If the arch will be inside, you will need to secure each end of the arch in a sturdy base. A large planter with soil and foliage or flowers on each end will work nicely as a base.
Create the Structure
-
4
Use a wire gauge thick enough so the structure will be able to stand upright once it has been decorated.
-
5
Decide what height you would like the arch to be. Seven to eight feet is a good bet, depending on the height of the couple.
-
6
Bend the wire into the shape of the arch. Make sure it is wide enough for one or two people to pass underneath. You can flatten out the top of the arch to create more space in the middle. You also can double wrap the wire to make it sturdier.
Decorate the Arch
-
7
Use fine gauge wire to attach the decorations you have chosen to the arch structure. Cover the base of the structure with the decorations so it is not visible.
-
8
Be creative with your decorations. Use photos of the couple or mementos from their time together.
-
9
Fill out the arch by intertwining foliage and flowers, or balloons and ribbon, around the structure to create a fuller-looking, more substantial structure.

Tips & Warnings
Create a fuller double arch by constructing two main arches, spacing them 3 to 6 inches apart and connecting them with fine-gauge wire.
