Due to scientific advances, people are now able to color their hair at home rather than having to visit a salon. This is especially helpful when trying to dye your hair white, otherwise known as platinum blond. Before it turns white, hair passes through several levels, including orange and yellow, before it turns the ultimate platinum blond color. Using a toner along with bleach will help you obtain the perfect shade of white.
Things You'll Need
- Deep conditioner
Do a strand test. Mix half of a teaspoon of color and developer together. Choose a piece of hair from one of the lower layers of your hair. Clip it aside from the rest of your hair. Apply the mixture to that strand to help you determine how long it will take for the bleach to work on your hair.
Put on your gloves. Mix the bleach and developer together. Apply to your hair, starting with any new growth, and work your way down the hair. Leave the bleach on your hair based on the results from your strand test. Keep in mind that if your hair is darker than light brown, you will not be able to lift it to white in one bleaching session.
Rinse the bleach from your hair. Shampoo the hair to ensure that no chemicals remain. Next, apply the deep conditioner to your hair. Let the conditioner sit on your hair for three to five minutes. Rinse the conditioner thoroughly out of your hair.
Apply the toner once your hair is dry. Toner will neutralize any brassiness in your hair and will allow you to get the truest white color. Apply first to the areas that need it the most. Toner should be left on the hair for approximately 35 to 40 minutes, but follow the directions that come with the toner if they differ from this recommendation.
Rinse the toner from your hair. Follow the toner with a deep conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes, just as you did last time.
Tips & Warnings
- If your hair had artificial hair color on it, the bleach will work more slowly to remove the color than if it were your natural hair color.
- Pamper your hair for the few weeks after it has been bleached. Wash it less often and deep condition it regularly.
- If your scalp starts to burn, rinse the bleach out immediately.
- Do not shampoo for 24 hours prior to bleaching the hair.
- If you have to bleach your hair again due to it not lightening enough, wait a minimum of one week.
