How to Find the Underhood Engine Bay Paint Code

Car paint colors may seem to be the same, but car manufacturers actually use specific tints of paint, which are categorized by a proprietary paint code. The format of this code differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, just as a red car from one manufacturer is actually not quite the same color as a red car from another manufacturer. All cars have a label somewhere that gives the paint code. That way, if you have a fender bender or scrape your car's paint, the body shop can determine exactly what shade to use for repairs. The location of the label differs by manufacturer, but for many, it is located on the firewall in the engine bay.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the hood release lever on the floor on the driver's side of the passenger compartment.

    • 2

Pull the hood up and secure the hood with the hood strut to keep it up.

    • 3

Look for the straight metal wall between your engine and the passenger compartment. This is called the firewall, and it's the far back wall of the engine compartment.

    • 4

Walk around to the side of the car so that you can get a closer look and locate the paint code. It will likely be on a small tag made of shiny metal, though it is sometimes stamped directly on the metal firewall.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't find the code on the firewall, it is in a more specific place determined by the manufacturer. Sportwing, which can be found online, offers information about paint codes based on the vehicle's manufacturer.
