Depression can be so debilitating that you become immobile. It stops you from pursuing your goals, from achieving your potential, from connecting with others. Medications to help relieve depression be helpful but they usually don't give you the authentic experience you crave. They mask the symptoms and can get you out of bed doing the things you need to do in your life. But they can also create this artificial internal sense. You don't connect with others as you normally would. You are not in control of your life.

Taking back control is not as difficult as you might think.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Recognize the signs and symptoms of depression. Depression is more than just feeling down or blue. It affects your sleeping patterns, it affects your ability to concentrate, it affects the relationships in your life. You lose interest in activities that you once enjoyed. You feel helpless, hopeless, that there is nothing you can do to improve your situation.

  2. Step 2

Seek help. Fighting depression is an overwhelming endeavor but only you can save yourself from its grasp. When you are feeling the most hopeless or the least amount of energy to accomplish anything, it's most important to take any step to pull yourself out. Seeking help can take many forms from consulting with your physician, to consulting with a psychiatrist to finding out more information on the internet.

  3. Step 3

Do something, anything, to take a step forward. It may be as simple as getting out of your pajamas and getting dressed, even if you have no where to go. Or taking that shower you've been avoiding. Do something positive every day.
