How to Make Yogurt From Scratch
You'll never want to buy yogurt from the store again! Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 1 qt milk
- 1 small container of plain yogurt
- 1 mesium saucepan with lid
- 1 kitchen thermometer
Instructions
-
-
1
Put all of the milk in the saucepan (lid on or off, it does't matter).
-
2
Insert the thermometer (if it has an alarm, set it to 100 Deg Fahrenheit or 38 Deg Celsius), heat the milk to 100 Deg Fahrenheit or 38 Deg.
-
-
3
Mix the yougurt into the warm milk with a spoon or a whisk.
-
4
Warm up your kitchen oven mildly (up to 125 Deg Fahrenheit) and then turn it off. This is only needed to provide a lukewarm environment for the yogurt starter to react.
-
5
Insert the saucepan with the milk / yogurt mixture in the oven and cover it with the lid. Leave it inside the oven for 5-8 hours (I normally do it in the evening before going to bed, and have wonderful yogurt in the morning).
-
6
After 5-8 hours, stir the whole mixture and distribute it to jars (possibly glass jars) and store it in your fridge. This yogurt lasts at least for 10 days.
-
7
Save some yogurt to use as starter for the next batch.
ENJOY!!!

Tips & Warnings
Use whole milk for thicker yogurt.
If you don't have a thermometer, use your finger to test the milk temperature, it should be the same as your body (I did this for years before buying a thermometer).
If you use low fat or fat free milk, you'll have some water forming on the top: either remove it with a ladle or mix it in.
