Instructions

    • 1

On the back of your computer connect either a VGA cable or HDMI cable, depending on the type of output connection you have available. The VGA connector is a 15 pin connector and will typically have a monitor symbol next to the outlet. A HDMI outlet is similar to a USB connector in size and shape except it is not perfectly retangular. HDMI cables are typically more expensive than VGA cables, particularly if they are longer.

Run the cable to the back of the HDTV or plat panel TV. Run the cable on the ground or along the wall to avoid anyone tripping over the cord which may result in injury to people, the computer, and the HDTV.

    • 3

Connect the VGA or HDMI cable to an open input connection on the back of the HDTV. Keep the wires tidy to make things easy. If you leave enough slack in the cable you will be able to tuck the cable away when not using the computer.

    • 4

On the HDTV select the appropriate input number of the VGA or HDMI connector. Most newer plat panel TVs allow you to customize the name of this input connector. Call it computer or laptop so you will remember next time.

    • 5

On the computer look for the symbol shown in the photo. Typically it will be F5 on most laptops. Press this button to output video through the external video connector. If this does not work, right click on your video card settings in the traybar at the bottom right of the screen and manually select output of the computer video through the external VGA or HDMI connector.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a wireless keyboard and mouse to control your computer from the comfort of your chair or couch.

  • In Windows 7 starter, only one video display can be selected at a time, either at the computer or external monitor (TV).
