How to Get Help With Hospital Bills and Debt
Medical debt can add a huge burden, especially for the uninsured. Even a seemingly minor illness can add up to a huge bill. Don't let the bill sit until you get calls from a collection agency. Act as soon as you get the bill and work out a plan with the hospital.

1
Ask the hospital about nonprofit or charity help. Many hospitals have charity funds from nonprofit organizations that help needy patients pay for some or all of their bills. Patients are generally not told of these resources, so they must ask. Call the hospital financial department and find out if you qualify for help.
-
2
The hospital may agree to a settlement or a reduced bill. You may ask the hospital if they would be willing to give you the Medicaid rate or some other discounted rate on your bill.

-
3
Request an itemized bill. The bill you get may not include a full list of all your charges. Look for errors such as care, tests and other treatments you didn't receive. Dispute mistakes or incorrect charges.
-
4
Negotiate a payment plan. Many hospitals allow patients to pay off their bills in increments as low as 10 percent of the bill each month.

Tips & Warnings
Make it clear to the hospital billing department that you are intent on paying the bill. Letting them know how much you want to fulfill your obligation can put you on good footing to negotiate.
