How to Become a Freelance Model

Freelance models are models who do not have exclusive representation with one modeling agency. Freelance models sometimes work with multiple modeling and talent agencies on a nonexclusive basis to find work. although lots of freelance models find modeling jobs on their own by marketing and promoting themselves to photographers, fashion designers, and other clients.

  • Find a photographer and get photos. If you do not already have good, clear photos of yourself, find a photographer and set up a photo shoot to get photographs. If you do not have the money to pay for a professional photographer to shoot you, try to find TFP photographers who will photograph you for free in exchange for your time. Be sure to do your research on different photographers and view their work before decide to work with them.

  • Build a modeling portfolio and get comp cards to send to clients after you receive your photos back from your photo shoot. Once you have your portfolio put together and have some comp cards, start sending them off to nonexclusive modeling agencies and photographers to try and get modeling jobs.

  • Find nonexclusive modeling agencies. Nonexclusive representation allows to you sign up with multiple modeling agencies to get modeling work. Just be sure you are offered nonexclusive representation so that you aren't stuck with a binding modeling contract. You can find a free list of modeling agencies in the References section.

  • Apply to casting calls. Find a list of free casting calls (look in the References section) and auditions to apply to in order to get modeling jobs. As a freelance model, you will have to constantly market and promote yourself in order to find modeling jobs.
