Valances boxes, or cornices, are an easy option to dress up your window treatments and can be customized to fit any décor style. The most popular valances are padded ones; they are elegant, classic and very easy to make yourself! With just a few supplies, a little time and fabric; you can have beautiful padded valance boxes for your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Three ½" thick pieces of plywood
  • Wood Glue
  • Hammer & Nails
  • Tape measure & pencil
  • Batting
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Spray adhesive
  • Staple Gun
  • L-bracket hardware
  1. Step 1

First, figure the depth of the box by measuring from the wall to where drapery rod protrudes. Then add 2 inches.
The height should be one-fifth the length of the draperies.
    (Example: 84" draperies = 16.8" cornice)

  2. Step 2

Next, have your lumber cut according to your measurements from step one. You will need a front piece and 2 side pieces.
**You may also add a top piece to work as a shelf but it is not necessary.

  3. Step 3

Using your wood glue, attach the 2 sides of the box to the front piece. Secure with nails to ensure proper hold. Allow the glue to dry before moving on to step 3.

  4. Step 4

While the box is drying, determine the amount of fabric you need. Measure the cornice board from one end, across the front, and to the other end. Then add 4 inches.
**This will be the measurement for both the fabric and the batting.

  5. Step 5
    3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive

Apply a small amount of spray adhesive to the outside of the box and add two layers of batting.

  6. Step 6

Next, lay out your fabric on a flat surface. Place the cornice face down, making sure the batting stays flat. Staple the fabric to the inside top. Pull the fabric taut and staple to the inside bottom, and work your way to the ends. Fold the fabric at the edges and staple to the inside.

  7. Step 7

Finally, measure your valance box and attach the L brackets to the wall according to your measurements. Place the finished box onto the L-brackets and secure it to the brackets with screws, attaching on top corners of the box.

Tips & Warnings
  • For proper cutting, take your measurements to the lumber yard and have them cut it for you.
  • Always use caution when using a staple gun- keep those fingers out of the way!
