The poinsettia plant is recognized as the Christmas flower. During the holiday season potted poinsettias are readily available at the supermarket and used to help decorate for the holidays. But, after the season is over the plants typically get tossed in the garbage. There is a way to preserve your poinsettia plant, so you can use it again the for the next holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Give the poinsettia plant 4 hours of direct sunlight a day during the holiday season, in a draft free location. Night temperatures should be between 50 to 65 degrees and day temperature above 68 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Water the plant thoroughly after it has been allowed to dry slightly. The soil should be well draining.

  3. Step 3

Cut back the poinsettia plant in late spring, when it is done flowering. Repot in fresh potting soil.

  4. Step 4

Fertilize the poinsettia every two weeks during the spring and summer months only.

  5. Step 5

Place the poinsettia in a dark area (such as a closet) from late afternoon until morning beginning in late September and through October. A poinsettia needs an alteration of light and dark during this time in order to bloom. If you fail to do this, it will not flower.

Tips & Warnings
  • For years poinsettia plants were considered to be extremely poisonous, yet now many reliable sources claim that is untrue. But, I wouldn't add it to my salad just yet!
