1
Different areas of sod require different watering amounts and schedules. Areas under shade trees or next to fences, for example, likely require less watering.
-
2
Begin watering grass sod 30 to 40 minutes after installation. Water twice daily for one week. Initially, your goal is to soak sod and soil completely. Water for 15 minutes (about an inch of water) using a water hose or sprinkler. This prepares the texture of the grass sod and soil for proper rooting.

After the first week, reduce daily watering to once a week. Water sod for 20 to 25 minutes, being careful not to overwater, which will cause the sod to become too soggy and not take root. Keep this schedule for about six weeks.
-
4
Water early morning or early evening. The best times are between 7 and 10 a.m. and 2 and 3 p.m. throughout the summer. (Reference 1) During extra hot summer weather, water at 11 a.m. to prevent sod from drying out.

5
After six or seven weeks, increase your watering schedule to every other day. Sod should be firmly rooted and integrated into the soil by this time. Continue with this schedule for the entire summer. The outcome should be a lawn with beautiful, healthy green grass.

Tips & Warnings
To maintain a lush and attractive lawn, soak grass with 5 to 6 inches of water every other day, an inch more for extra hot summer days.
Reduce the amount of water for grass sod under shade trees and other cool areas. These areas don't require as much water as sod in open sun. Sod should be uniformly firm, not soggy or muddy.
