How to Clean Automotive Leather Products

Leather is an upholstery option available in both new and used vehicles. From seats to consoles, leather is even used on the dashboard of many vehicles. Leather, like other materials, must be cleaned regularly to remove dust and dirt build. You must also condition leather to maintain its look and feel. Failure to properly maintain your automotive leather products leads to cracks forming and the leather fading.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Latex gloves
  • 2 soft cloths
  • Leather cleaner
  • Leather conditioner

Instructions

    • 1

      Fill a bucket with ½ gallon of warm water, and set it to the side of your car. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands from getting wet.

      Wipe the automotive leather products with a dry, soft cloth to remove any loose dust and dirt.

      Wet a soft cloth with warm water from the bucket. Wring out excess water.

      Apply a tsp. of leather cleaner to the wet cloth.

      Wipe the leather cleaner onto automotive leather products. Wipe the entire leather surface. If needed, apply another tsp. of cleaner if the leather product is large.

      Let the leather cleaner sit for five minutes.

      Dip the soft cloth back in the bucket of water, and wring out excess water.

      Rinse off the leather cleaner from the automotive leather products with the wet cloth.

      Apply a tsp. of leather conditioner to a dry, soft cloth.

      Wipe the leather conditioner on the automotive leather products, and let it sit for 10 minutes.

      Massage as much of the leather conditioner as you can into the surface.

      Wipe off excess leather conditioner with a dry, soft cloth.
      If this is your first time treating the automotive leather products with a conditioner, repeat steps 9 to 12.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your automotive leather products have any mildew present, mix 1 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1 cup of warm water in a pot. Dip a clean cloth in the alcohol/water solution, wring out excess liquid, and wipe the affected area. Dry the area with a dry cloth, and apply a tsp. or more of leather conditioner.
