How to Set Up IV Tubing for a Blood Transfusion

Setting up an IV tube in the perfect way is essential to prevent the incident of anything unwanted happening in the blood-transfusion procedure. Blood transfusion is a procedure performed to replete the levels of blood in the body. It is important to maintain the hygienic field while performing the procedure of blood transfusion to avoid any sort infection getting into the body. Supplying blood through the medium of intravenous infusion is the fastest way of regaining the normal blood levels in the body. Blood loss can occur due to some trauma or in response to a chronic disease like anaemia, uncontrollable menstrual cycle or a malignant condition.

Instructions

      Clean the surface of the respective wrist (in which the canula has to be placed for transfusion).

      Coat the canula with an anticoagulant solution, such as sodium chloride. By doing so, you can prevent the coagulation of blood at any of the ends of canula.

      Attach one end of the 3-way canula to the blood tubing.

      Inject the anticoagulant solution into the vein of the wrist and leave the needle in place.

      Detach the syringe from the needle. Firmly press the vein while removing the syringe.

      Attach the other end of the canula to the needle. The intravenous setup is now complete for blood transfusion procedure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before hooking up the blood tubing to the blood bag, make sure there is no air bubble in the blood bag. If there is any, it should be removed by spiking the bag.
