From lighted shapes to enormous inflatables, lawn decorations need to be supported and secured to prevent the wind, weather, wandering animals, pranksters and thieves from destroying your investment. Permanent decorations are easiest to secure, but seasonal items need something that can be released or disassembled at will.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shovel
  • Concrete mix
  • Wheelbarrow or plastic storage bin
  • 12-inch U-bolts
  • Sharp-sided gravel
  • Nylon-covered cable
  • Metal crimps
  • Padlock
  • Heavy leather gloves
  • Wraparound eye protection
  1. Step 1

Arrange your lawn decorations as desired. Place more valuable decorations closer to the house.

  2. Step 2

Dig holes eight inches deep at the corners of your largest decorations.

  3. Step 3

Mix concrete in a wheelbarrow or plastic storage bin, according to package directions.

  4. Step 4

Place 12-inch-long U-bolts in each hole, with open ends pointing down and the closed end about three inches above the soil surface. Backfill the hole with sharp-sided gravel to keep U-bolts upright. Sharp-sided gravel will interlock under pressure and prevent the U-bolt from being pulled out of the concrete.

  5. Step 5

Fill holes with concrete and allow to harden for two to three days.

  6. Step 6

Cross nylon-covered cables over each lawn decoration and pull snug without squashing or cutting into it. Make a loop in each end of the cable and use a metal crimp to secure it.

  7. Step 7

Run cables through the U-bolts and secure with a padlock through the loops.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many inflatable decorations contain copper wiring, which is particularly attractive to thieves. Use motion-sensor lights to make it harder for thieves to steal your decorations without being seen.
