There are plenty of places where a "No Smoking" sign is needed. From airplanes and restaurants to public bathrooms, having a clearly visible "No Smoking" sign is important to protect those who do not wish to encounter second-hand smoke. This is especially true in hospitals and other areas where individuals with breathing conditions are being treated. A "No Smoking" sign can be designed fairly quickly using a graphics program on your computer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on the exact phrase you want to use. For instance, you might want a straightforward "No Smoking" sign, or you might want to add a bit more detail to your sign. A sign that reads "No Smoking Except in Designated Areas" points smokers to locations where they can smoke without it effecting nonsmokers. Decide if you want to use a graphic, such as a cigarette with a line through it. You should also decide if you want to include the same message in multiple languages.

  2. Step 2

Choose a computer graphics program to design your sign. You can use a basic program, like Microsoft Office's Paint program. There are also programs, including Photoshop and the freeware program GIMP, that allow you to take your design to a more professional level by utilizing the layers panel. This article will assume the use of one the latter two programs. Begin by clicking on "File" then "New." Choose the desired width and height of your sign and plug these numbers into the dialog box. Follow the same process when plugging in the desired resolution, generally it is best to select 300 pixels for anything that will be printed.

  3. Step 3

Bring in all outside graphics you intend to use when creating your sign's design. This might be a photo of a person smoking or a simple graphic of a cigarette with an "x" marked through it. You may, of course, choose to create the entirety of your sign including text and graphics within the program.

  4. Step 4

Next, select an easily readable font type, like Times New Roman. You may also wish to change your text to "bold." Place each element (text, graphics, photos) on a new layer. For elements brought into the program, each of these will automatically be placed on their own layer. Select the "Text" box tool to type your text. You can then use the "Arrow" tool to reposition your text, if necessary. Remember to create each new element on a separate layer to allow for easier fine-tuning of each element without effecting elements on other layers. Save a copy of your final design as a high resolution JPEG in order to print it.

  5. Step 5

Have your signs printed. While it is possible to print your own small signs on your office computer, if you want a sign that looks professional and will last (and especially if your sign will be printed on metal) it is best to have your sign printed by a print shop or an office supply store, like Staples. Staples offers sign printing as well as a design service (if you prefer to to have someone else create your design for you.)
