How to Add a Background Color to a Web Page

Background colors can add emphasis and provide contrast to a Web page.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Open a text-editing program, such as EditPad or Notepad. From the File menu, select Open.
Step2
Locate the Web page file and double-click to open it.
Step3
Place the cursor after the Head tag. Type the following: body bgcolor=.
Step4
Type the name of the desired color (green, blue, red) after the = sign.
Step5
Select Save from the File menu. Open your Web browser.
Step6
Open the file by clicking File, selecting Open and locating the file. Double click or select Open.
Step7
Upload the page to your Web site.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more complex colors, use the HEX color chart, available in many HTML reference manuals.
  • If you use a dark or brightly colored background, be sure to use a contrasting color for your text, such as white or yellow.
