Float fishing for steelhead trout is a popular angling technique for catching this hard-fighting gamefish on natural bait or jigs. The principal piece of rigging is a torpedo-shaped float, or bobber, which can be adjusted in seconds to move the bait to a different depth where the fish are schooling. Two tubes attach on either end of the float body, with the main line running through them. When fishing conditions change, simply adjust the float to a new position and cast again.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steelhead floats
  • Rod and reel spooled with line
  • Hooks
  • Jigs in assorted colors
  • Salmon eggs or dough balls.
  1. Step 1

Remove the tubes from the top and bottom of the float.

  2. Step 2

Slide the main line through both tubes.

  3. Step 3

Tie a hook or jig using a clinch knot to the end of the line. Instructions for tying are linked in the reference section.

  4. Step 4

Bait a bare hook with salmon eggs or dough balls, available at tackle shops. If using a jig, skip this step.

  5. Step 5

Slide apart the two float tubes.

  6. Step 6

Insert the bottom end of the top tube into the top of the float and insert the top end of the bottom tube into the bottom of the float.

  7. Step 7

Remove the tubes and slide to a new position on the line, then reattach the float to adjust the depth of the hook or jig.
