How to Remove Tandem Trailer Springs

Removing the springs from a tandem-axle trailer is not much different from a single-axle trailer but there are more fasteners to deal with. If you take your time and work methodically, you can complete a project like this in a few hours. The job can be completed using hand tools for the most part.

Instructions

    • 1

Jack up the trailer and set it securely on a set of jack stands. Use jack stands rated for the weight of the trailer.

    • 2

Remove the wheels using a lug wrench or breaker bar. Slide the jack under one of the axles.

    • 3

Remove the U-bolts holding the axle to the spring of the axle that the jack is supporting. Slowly lower the axle away from the spring, setting it on another set of jack stands or blocks.

    • 4

Move the jack to the second axle and remove the U-bolt on this axle as well. Lower it and support it as well. U-bolts are most easily removed by simply cutting them with an oxyacetylene cutting torch. They should never be reused.

    • 5

Remove the bolts that are securing the spring. You can start in the back or the front. Leave the center in place until all the other bolts are out, though.

    • 6

Apply heat to the bolts with the torch to help free them up. If they have been in the spring and hanger for a long time, corrosion and rust will be a factor. If these springs are being reused, be careful not to melt the bushings.

    • 7

Remove all four bolts on the front and rear of the springs first. Pulling the springs down will drop them out of the hangers slightly.

    • 8

Remove the bolts on the equalizer in the center of the two springs and pull each spring out of the equalizer. If they do not come out easily, you can heat them or use a dead blow hammer to help them along. Be careful if you use a hammer to drive the spring from the hanger as they may pop free unexpectedly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray the bolts with a good penetrating oil for several days before you start the job to make removing the bolts easier.

  • Use caution when cutting or heating bolts with a torch. If the bolts are under pressure, they may snap when you least expect it.
