1
Lay the cotton fabric on a table or flat surface with the right side down. Remove the check book from the vinyl cover that comes with it, and set aside the checks. Open up the vinyl cover and lay it on the fabric with some fabric showing all around. Use the pencil to trace around the checkbook cover.

2
Cut out the fabric around the checkbook cover, making sure to cut 1/2 inch away from all penciled lines. This is your main checkbook cover piece. Measure the width of this cut out piece of fabric. Cut out two more pieces of fabric that are this same width and 3 inches long.

3
Fold over the edge on the two long sides of the main piece 1/4 inch and finger press the fabric to hold. Fold the fabric over again 1/4 inch and sew along the fold line, making sure to catch all the layers of the fabric in the seam. These are the side hems in your checkbook cover.

4
Sew one long seam and both short seams of the smaller fabric pieces in exactly the same manner. This will result in two smaller pieces of fabric that have been hemmed on three sides.
-
5
Lay the main fabric piece on the table with the right side up and the hemmed edges to the side. Place one smaller piece of fabric on top of the main piece with the right side down. The raw edge of the smaller piece of fabric should exactly match the raw top edge of the main piece. Sew along this unhemmed edge, using a 1/4-inch seam. Attach the other smaller piece to the other unhemmed edge of the main piece in the same manner.
-
6
Turn the piece over so that the right side is facing the table. Bring the smaller pieces over to the wrong side of the fabric and smooth the side edges down to match them. Carefully topstitch the short edges of the smaller piece to the side hems of the main cover piece. Backstitch at the end of each seam to secure it, as this point will get a lot of stress.
