How to Attach a Vapor Barrier to a Wall

A vapor barrier helps keep moisture out of the interior wall cavities, preventing such problems as mold, mildew and decay. The vapor barrier should be installed on the inner side of exterior walls. It should also be applied to bathroom walls where steam and water vapor may seep into the wall cavities. Installing vapor barriers in the kitchen and any other area where water vapor may accumulate is highly recommended. Vapor barriers also reduce the likelihood of drafts and heat loss.

Things You'll Need:

• Plastic sheets
• Staples
• Hammer tacker or staple gun
• Utility knife

1. Spread the plastic sheet out flat on the floor. Have each assistant pick up one corner of the plastic sheet and hold it up against the studs of the wall.

2. Attach the plastic to the wall studs with a hammer tacker or a staple gun. A hammer tacker is a very fast tool to use when installing a plastic vapor barrier.

3. Trim the excess plastic off at the corners and edges with a utility knife.
