How to Make Homemade Ear Cleaner for Dogs

All types of dogs are prone to getting yeast infections in their ears. Pet's ears also can become infested with ear mites. One way to prevent these issues is to clean out your dog's ears on a regular basis. This is something that can be done at home by any pet owner. Pet owners can even make the solution themselves, which allows them to be sure that no harmful ingredients are in the ear wash.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 oz. rubbing alcohol
  • 2 Tbsp. boric acid powder
  • 8 drops gentian violet solution 1%
  • Ear syringe
  • Bowl
  • Towel

Instructions

      Pour the rubbing alcohol into a bowl and add the boric acid.

      Drip the gentian violet solution 1% drops in the bowl and mix all three ingredients together.

      Fill a syringe with the ear wash solution and get a towel ready to catch the wash as it comes back out of your dog's ear.

      Hold onto your dog with your dominant hand, or have a friend or family member hold your dog. You don't want the dog to run away in the middle of the treatment.

      Squirt the solution into the dog's ear until the solution is coming back out of the ear clear. Make sure you are gentle and squirting the solution slowly. You don't want to damage your dog's eardrum.

      Repeat with the opposite ear. Do this once every other week for maintenance.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your dog has ear mites you will want to massage his ear for one minute during the treatment.

  • It's OK if the dog shakes his head after the treatment.

  • Never use a cotton swab in a dog's ear. You could do permanent damage to the ear if the dog was to move.
