How to Store Sugar Cane

Sugar cane is a popular cooking ingredient in Asian and Hispanic cuisines. First cultivated in Asia, this perennial grass is now grown in 120 countries around the world, with Australia and Brazil being the top producers. Seventy percent of the world's supply of sugar comes from processed sugar cane. It can be a challenge to find raw cane stalks in the United States. Things You'll Need

  • Raw sugar cane stalks
  • 2 small plastic bags
  • 2 rubber bands
  • Sharp knife
  • Refrigerator

      Use the sharp knife to cut the raw sugar cane stalks to the desired length. The length will depend on the recipe you are preparing.

      Tightly fasten the plastic bags around the ends of the stalks with the rubber bands. Squeeze out any excess air.

      Store the sugar cane in the vegetable crisper in the refrigerator or the lowest shelf for up to two weeks.
