How to Delete a Boot Virus
A boot virus is a virus that infects hard drives. Because of the nature of boot viruses, they are more dangerous than normal spyware, as they can ruin important files needed to run programs on your computer. Even worse, removing them can also cause files that the virus had infected to become corrupted. ComboFix is a small virus-scanning utility that specializes in rookit and boot virus removal. ComboFix is free and can be used repeatedly.

1
Download ComboFix (click the "Resources" link below for a fast download). When asked, save it to your "Desktop."
-
2
Click the "Start" button in the taskbar and select "Shut Down." Select "Restart Computer." After the splash screen (the first screen that your computer displays), press the "F8" key. Select "Safe Mode." This will start your computer in Safe Mode.

3
Click the ComboFix program that you saved to your Desktop. There is no installation required, as the program boots directly from the exe file. Agree to the "Terms of Use" by clicking the "Yes" button.
-
4
Wait while ComboFix creates a restore point. This is a safety precaution that ComboFix uses in the event that something important gets deleted while trying to get rid of the boot virus.
-
5
Install "Microsoft Recovery Console," if prompted. Just click "Yes" if asked. It will automatically install and begin the scanning process. You won't be asked to do so if it has already been installed.
-
6
Click the "Yes" button to begin the scan. Be patient, as this can take a while. Once complete, your computer will restart in normal mode and ComboFix will display a textlog containing a list of all the infections removed. The boot virus will be included.
