How to Groom a Miniature Poodle

Miniature poodles have a very distinctive look, regardless of whether they have the traditional poodle cut. Their curly hair is prone to mats. They can also develop ear infections, just like any other breed of dog. It is important to help prevent health issues by keeping your pet well groomed. Although a professional groomer is your best option to ensure a clean poodle, you should also use an at-home grooming regimen to keep your dog looking good between trips.

Instructions

Brush your poodle every other day using a pin brush. Mats can form quickly on a poodle and will become quite painful as the hair grows or gets wet. By brushing your dog frequently you can help prevent the mats from forming and avoid having to have the area shaved off.

Use a mild puppy shampoo when bathing. Baths should be limited to once or twice a month, barring a more pressing need for a bath.

Clean the dog's ears every week. Purchase a commercial ear cleaning and drying solution from your local pet store or from your veterinarian's office. Follow the bottle directions. Use a cotton ball to wipe away any excess ear wax or debris. If you prefer, you can use green tea instead of the commercial cleaner. Soak a tea bag as you would normally prepare a cup of tea. Remove the tea bag and allow the tea to cool completely. Add several drops of tea to your pet's ear canal and massage the base of the ear. Then use a clean cotton ball to wipe away excess fluid and earwax.

Trim her toenails every other week. Inside your dog's nail are blood vessels and a bundle of nerves. This is called the quick. If your dog's claws are light colored, you should be able to see the quick. The goal is to cut the nails, but never cut the quick--it will bleed and cause your dog much pain. If you happen to cut the quick, apply flour to the nail to stop the bleeding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your dog may resist your grooming attempts at first. But with repetition, you will teach your dog what to expect. Being patient and calm with your poodle while you are grooming him will help put him at ease.

  • With time and patience you can learn to clip your miniature poodle. This, however, can be an arduous task and it is highly recommended you leave it to a professional.

  • Check with a professional groomer or veterinarian for grooming suggestions for your particular breed.
