Instructions

    • 1

Smell around the bottom of the hot water heater for gas. If you smell gas, do not proceed to light the pilot light. Wait 15 minutes to allow the smell to clear out. If you still smell gas, call your local gas supplier.

    • 2

Turn the control knob to "Off." This will prevent the hot water heater from kicking on while you are attempting to light the pilot light.

    • 3

Remove the outside and inside panel cover. Typically, the outer panel cover is located at the bottom on the water heater. The inner panel is located directly behind the outer panel cover.

    • 4

Locate the end of the gas supply tube. The tube starts at the control valve and runs into the burning chambers of the water heater.

    • 5

Turn the control knob to "Pilot."

    • 6

Place the long multipurpose lighter at the end of the supply tube. This is where the pilot light is located.

    • 7

Hold down the red reset button and light the pilot light. A blue flame will appear. Do not release the red reset button yet. Hold down the reset button for about one minute after the pilot light is lit.

    • 8

Release the red reset button. Replace the inner and outer panel. Turn the control knob to "On."

Tips & Warnings

  • Never stick your hand inside the hot water heater. Do not attempt to light the pilot light if you continue to smell gas; this could mean that you have a gas leak and should contact your local gas supplier immediately.
