How to Clean Mold From Shingles
If you notice black or green stains on your asphalt shingles, it is more than likely mold. You can successfully remove mold from asphalt shingles yourself without enlisting the help of a professional. It is best to perform this job on a cloudy day, as the sun will quickly dry up the cleaning agents you are using. Things You'll Need
- 1 qt. bleach
- Water
- 1/4 cup trisodium phosphate
- Pump-style garden sprayer
- Ladder
- Garden hose
- 12 oz. copper sulfate
- Push broom

Combine 1 qt. bleach, ¼ cup trisodium phosphate and 1 gallon warm water into a pump-style garden sprayer. Shake up the sprayer gently to thoroughly combine the ingredients.

Use a ladder to reach the molded shingles. Have a helper hold the ladder and use caution when climbing.

Spray the cleaning solution onto the molded shingles. You can spray this solution over the entire roof, if you would prefer, to clean it evenly. Let the solution sit on the roof for 15 minutes.

Rinse off the cleaning solution with a garden hose. Be sure to rinse it thoroughly so that no mold residue remains on the roof.

Mix water and copper sulfate if there is still mold on the shingles. Combine 1 gallon warm water into a garden sprayer with 12 oz. dry copper sulfate. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Apply the cleaner to the shingles and wait for the mold stains to turn brown in color. Then, use a push broom to push off the solution and mold from the roof. Rinse off the shingles with a garden hose.
