This is an extremely effective defense designed to push the offense to the boards, where they are pinned and stymied by the defensive wings.

  1. Step 1

Set the defense in the neutral zone like the ends on a five-pointed star. The center is in the middle just inside the blue line on the offensive side of the rink. Two wings position themselves on the red line to either side of the center circle. The two defensemen maintain position on the back blue line, slightly inside of the wings.

  2. Step 2

Instruct the center to maintain his position as the offense approaches, forcing the attackers toward the boards.

  3. Step 3

Expect the offense to shift to the boards, then have the wing on that side move to disrupt any forward play.

  4. Step 4

Have the back defenseman on each side be watchful and ready to move forward if the offense slips past the wings.

Tips & Warnings
  • The center can move slightly from side to side in order to push the offense away. But he shouldn't stray too far from the middle.
  • Watch that the offense, when rushing forward near the boards, doesn't back pass and shoot the puck to a far outside wing. This can break the trap.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
