Rheumatoid arthritis causes joint pain and stiffness, and people living with this condition often have trouble completing simple tasks such as climbing stairs, rising from a chair and grasping objects. Things You'll Need:

  • Medication
  • Ice
  • Heat pad
  • Vitamins
  1. Step 1

Reverse arthritis with medication. Over the counter drugs may relieve mild to moderate pain associated with arthritis. To slow the progression and reverse rheumatoid, take a prescription anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressant drug as directed. Options include prednisone, steroid injections and methotrexate.

  2. Step 2

Place an ice pack, or a few ice cubes in a small plastic bag, on stiff or sore joints for 20 minutes, then remove for 20 minutes. Repeat as necessary to reduce inflammation. Painful and stiff joints may respond to ice therapy.

  3. Step 3

Ease swelling with heat therapy. If you can't handle coldness, use heat to relieve joint pain and swelling. Use a heat compress, or take frequent hot baths.

  4. Step 4

Maintain a healthy body weight. Being overweight puts pressure on your joints, which can cause ankle, hip and knee pain. Adopt healthy eating habits, such as reducing fat and sugar intake and decreasing food portions.

  5. Step 5

Exercise daily. It can strengthen achy joints and increase mobility. To reverse rheumatoid arthritis, participate in low-impact exercises such as Pilates, swimming, yoga and walking. Start slowly and aim for 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

  6. Step 6

Ask your doctor about supplements. Take omega-3 fish oil supplements to naturally reduce inflammation, joint pain and fatigue. Other options include glucosamine supplements, which can reverse joint damage and improve joint health.
