How to Change Electrical Breakers
Circuit breakers are a integral part of the electrical system within out homes. The main function of a breaker is to turn on or off the power to a particular outlet, set of outlets or device. Inside the breaker is a trip mechanism that if triggered due to an overload, will immediately terminate the power to that outlet to prevent damage, fire or electrocution. Circuit breakers will wear out and need to be replaced from time to time, and should be done with great care and caution. Unplug any appliances or devices to the outlet of the circuit breaker to be replaced. Turn off the main power switch to the circuit panel. This is located either at the top of the panel our outside of the home next to the electrical meter on the side of the house where the power comes in off the street.

Using the screwdriver, carefully remove all the screws used to mount the power panel cover and door over the electrical box.

Before touching any wiring, use the voltage tester to test the main circuit breaker and make sure no power is flowing through the circuit. The voltage reading should be zero.

Locate the circuit breaker to be replaced and disconnect the black (hot) wire from the screw on the breaker using the screwdriver. Completely remove the screw as well.

Using the screwdriver, pop the side of the breaker out that is closest to the center of the panel. Carefully lift out the breaker and discard it.

Slide the new of the breaker into the slot, and pop the end down onto the connector (closest to the center of the panel).

Connect the black wire to the screw and tighten in a snug fit.

Replace the cover panel and door and screw in the screws to a snug fit. Turn the main power switch back on.
