How to Make Photos Black & White With Colors

With the advent of the digital camera, photographers now have the ability to easily enhance and alter the photos they take. Cropping, adding glow and/or tints, and changing the colors are all ways to have fun with photos. Creating black and white images and adding an element of color are popular, eye catching photo enhancements. Photoshop is one way to make arty photos.

How to Make Photos Black and White with Color

  • In Adobe Photoshop, open the color photo image that you want to alter. Download a free trial at if you don't have the program.

  • Find the magic wand icon on the left panel toolbar. In Photoshop CS4 it is the fourth option from the top. After clicking on the icon, select magic wand if you are keeping only one item in color, or quick selection tool if you are keeping multiple items in color.

  • Click on the item in the photo that will remain in color. The magic wand/quick selection tool will outline it.

  • Under the Select tab, choose "Inverse" from the drop-down menu. This automatically outlines the elements of the photo not outlined by the magic wand or quick selection tool.

  • Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Adjust the saturation bar towards the left, which drains the color from the photo, leaving only the portion highlighted by the magic wand tool in color.
