How to Control TV With PSP

The PSP portable video game console is actually a multipurpose computer that you can hold in your hand. It can control a TV set like a remote because it has a built-in infrared sensor at the top. Sony didn't include this feature into the PSP's operating system, but you can add this if you're willing to modify the PSP's operating system. Using the PSP to control the TV will not will not hurt the TV set in any way.

  1. Modifying the PSP Game Console

      Insert a memory stick pro into the PSP. Navigate from the Home menu to the USB mode. Connect the PSP USB connector cable to the PSP and to a USB port on the computer.

      Download and install uTorrent. Run uTorrent and search for "kd" and "registry". Download the "kd" and "registry" files to the desktop of the computer. Quit uTorrent.

      Download and decompress the TotalNewbieasyInstaller program to the desktop of the Windows-based computer. Run the program and select "Install the Universal Unbricker" from the menu presented.

      Drag the "kd" and "registry" files to the root folder of the PSP's memory stick that is found in "start", "MyComputer", "Devices." Right-click on the icon of the memory stick pro and select "Eject" to disconnect it.

      Disconnect the PSP USB connector cable from the PSP and from the USB port of the computer.

      Navigate the PSP back to the Home menu. Turn the PSP off. Remove the memory stick pro from the PSP's memory slot and put it aside.

      Put a clean cloth down on a work surface. Put the PSP down on the clean cloth face down. Open the battery compartment and remove the battery and put it aside.

      Take the Sony PSP battery and split it open using the X-acto knife. Locate the connector labeled "CO4" or "ICO4".

      Break off the fifth pin of the connector counting from the bottom left using the safety pin.

      Put the battery back together. Insert the battery into the PSP and close the battery compartment. Turn the PSP over and wait as the now-created Pandora battery modifies the console's operating system. Press the "X" button whenever the screen asks you to. Press the "X" button to turn off the PSP when prompted.

      Insert the memory stick pro into the PSP's memory slot. Turn on the PSP and press the "X" button when the MS LED adn Wi-FI LED lights glow. Wait a few minutes as the PSP runs and then turns itself off.

      Remove the Pandora battery from the PSP. Remove the memory stick pro. Put the first battery back into the PSP and turn it on. A firmware screen showing 3.7 M33 or 3.71 M33-2 now indicates that the PSP has been modified.

    Installing the Remote Software

      Insert the memory stick pro storage card into the memory stick slot on the PSP. Turn the PSP on and navigate from the Home menu to the USB mode. Press the "X" button to activate the USB mode.

      Attach the PSP USB cable to the PSP and the other end to a USB port on the computer.

      Download and install the "PSP Universal Remote" file to the desktop of the computer and decompress it.

      Open the folder and copy both of the folders inside to the "Game" folder inside of the memory stick pro that is located in "Start", "MyComputer", "Devices".

      Disconnect the PSP USB folder from the PSP and from the USB port of the computer. Navigate from the USB mode on the PSP to the Games folder.

      Select the PSP Universal Remote program inside of the Games folder. Press the "X" button to start the program.

      Select the TV make and model from the list that the program now presents. Press the "X" button to activate the settings.

      Aim the PSP at the television set and use the D-Pad and control buttons to control the TV as if you were using a remote control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to follow the steps exactly for copying the Universal Remote program to the PSP, as otherwise it could cause the PSP to lock up and stop working.

  • A modified PSP voids the warranty and Sony will do no repair work on it.
