How to Glaze a Ham With a Propane Torch

Glazing a ham is a great way to impart flavor into your ham with little effort. You can do this simply using a propane torch. Propane torches are small, hand-held and easy to use. You can find them at most kitchen hardware stores or at specialty shops like Williams-Sonoma. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Ham
  • Brown Sugar
  • Fruit Juice
  • OR
  • Mustard
  • Small saucepan
  • Propane torch

      Look for something that has a visible safety latch as well as one that will stay lit without you having to hold down the trigger when you are selecting your propane torch. When you have to hold down the trigger you risk burns by being too close to what it is that you are melting.

      Cook your ham throughly and prepare your glaze. Glazes for ham always include some form of sugar, most commonly brown sugar. You can use the sugar by itself or you can heat up the sugar in a small saucepan with mustard or fruit juice. Just remember you want a majority of the glaze to be sugar.
      Simple Glaze
      1 c. Brown Sugar
      ½ c. Pineapple or Apple Juice
      OR
      ½ c. Mustard

      Spread the glaze all over the outside of the ham after you have allowed the glaze to cool slightly. Then according to the instructions given with your propane torch, light it and begin to caramelize the sugar. You will be able to see your progress. The sugar will become hard and create a great crust. You are now ready to slice and serve your ham.
