Give your hair a homemade steam treatment.

Steam treatments are extremely beneficial to hair and contribute greatly to its health. The steam treatment opens the hair cuticle to allow a deep conditioner to further penetrate, giving you healthier, softer and stronger hair. Professional hair steamers cost well over $100, so learn to steam your hair at home and you won't have to empty your wallet.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 1 hair turban towel
    • 1 bowl
    • Thick gloves
    • Plastic cap
    • Hair dryer with hood
      • 1

Saturate your hair with a moisturizing conditioner or a natural, organic oil, such as extra virgin olive oil or virgin coconut oil, and place a plastic cap on your head.

      • 2

Place a turban towel in a microwave-safe bowl of water and microwave it until hot.

      • 3

Put on a pair of thick gloves. Remove the hot towel from the bowl and wring it out.

      • 4

Remove the plastic cap from your head and immediately put the turban towel around your hair. Put the plastic cap back on. If you feel the plastic cap is not tight enough, wrap a satin cap or scarf around your head to lock in the heat.

      • 5

Sit under a hooded dryer for 20 to 30 minutes.

      • 6

Remove the caps and turban towel. Your freshly steamed hair will feel warm and soft.

Rinse your hair with the coolest water you can stand to close the hair cuticles and lock in the moisture.

    Tips & Warnings

    • To create a more intense steam treatment, use two turbans and two plastic caps, layering one after the other.

    • Be extremely careful when handling hot towels so that you do not scold yourself.
