“Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam… and I will be healthier and happier.” Years ago when living in Atlanta, we stumbled across a restaurant called Ted’s Montana Grill. I was in the mood for a really good, power hamburger. As I browsed the scrumptious looking pictures on the menu, I noticed that their burgers and other items on the menu were made with 100% natural bison (buffalo) meat. After the waiter shared his knowledge about the health benefits of bison compared to beef and other meats and assured me that the flavor was incredible, I sat down to the best burger I have ever had. The following will show you how you can benefit your health by eating bison instead of beef and other meats.

  1. Step 1

    When eating bison meat, you are consuming a natural product, which is good for your health. Bison are strictly grass-fed, not fed in a feed lot. They are also handled as little as possible, and are not subjected to questionable drugs, chemicals, growth-inducing hormones or steroids that can be detrimental to your health.

    When eating bison meat, there is not a threat of E-coli and it contains no known human allergens.

    When eating bison meat you are consuming a healthy alternative meat that is lower in fat, calories, and cholesterol than beef, turkey, skinless chicken and fish.

    For example, a 3 oz serving is broken down as such:

    Bison: 93 Calories

    Turkey: 125 Calories
 3.0 grams Fat

    When eating Bison meat you are consuming a highly nutrient dense food because of the proportion of protein, fat, minerals, and fatty acids to its caloric value. Ounce for ounce, bison has only about 1/4 of the fat beef has, is more unsaturated than beef, is much higher in iron. Studies at major universities confirm that Buffalo meat is very high in the essential fatty acids, have an excellent ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 acids and contain much more CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) than was known. CLA which is an Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, or "good fat" enhances the body's ability to promote a healthy metabolism.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bison tastes similar to fine beef, with just a slightly sweeter and richer flavor. Being naturally flavorful and tender, it can be prepared the same as beef and used in any dishes that you would normally use beef in.

  • Buffalo falls into the gourmet or specialty meat category at your supermarket or meat market. The cost is somewhat more than beef, however, the value is not what you pay, but what you get in return.
  • I buy bison at Publix or Krogers, usually found in ground form. There are also on-line companies that sell and ship the buffalo meat to you.
  • Buffalo is a dense meat that tends to satisfy you more while eating less.
