A good majority of the decor in my home is made of recycled materials. So when I recently came across another used bowling ball for $1 at the local thrift shop, of course, I just had to bring it home. Anyone can recycle bowling balls as doorstops if you have an extra dollar or two and can spare the three minutes it takes to make them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bowling ball
  • 4 Felt pads for furniture legs (self adhesive type)
  • Silk flowers
  • Wire cutters
  • OPTIONAL: Three 1/2" plastic test tubes, plant cuttings

Clean the bowling ball and dry. Adhere four self-adhesive felt furniture pads to the bottom of the ball which will prevent the recycled bowling ball from rolling.

  2. Step 2

Decorate the bowling ball doorstop by placing colorful silk flowers into the thumb and finger holes. Use wire cutters to shorten the silk flower stems. Make a small loop with the stem at the bottom of the silk flowers so they will fit snugly into the holes of the recycled bowling ball.

  3. Step 3

Make the recycled bowling ball perform double duty both as a doorstop and a plant rooter. Add a bit of water to each test tube and put the test tubes into the holes in the bowling ball. Place the plant cuttings into the test tubes. Check water level in the test tubes every few days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sit on the floor while adhering the furniture pads to the bowling ball, so you can test each pad's position immediately and reposition pad if needed.
  • Stagger the height of the silk flowers to create more interest.
  • A recycled bowling ball doorstop should not be used in a narrow doorway as they do protrude out a bit.
