How to Care for Your Rabbit

Never had a rabbit before? This article will help you choose the breed and how to care for your rabbit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choosing the breed of rabbit, there are many choices to choose from. The Holland lop is great with children, it's approximately four to five pounds, it's not the smallest breed but it has the best personalities. Another good choice is the mini rex, there about the same size with a beautiful coat and also a good personality. Your nether land dwarf is a smaller size bunny, but not necessarily the best choice for kids, they tend to a bit of an attitude.

  2. Step 2

Choosing your cage is basic, you either have an indoor cage or a hutch for outside. If your choosing an indoor cage make sure it's large enough for the type of rabbit you have picked. If your getting a Holland lop or a mini rex then you should have a cage approximately thirty six inches. A smaller bunny you can use a thirty inch. If your buying a hutch for outdoors make sure it stands off the ground high enough and that it can go under the eve' s of your house for shade also make sure there is an enclosed area inside the cage, so your bunny can keep warm and out of the rain.

  3. Step 3

Giving your bunny plenty of playtime is very important. Make sure you spend quality time with it. It needs to be out of it's cage once a day if not more. Cages aren't big enough to contain them all the time. If you want your bunny to remain sweet and calm, handle your bunny a lot. If the kids are handling them, make sure there sitting down, bunny's who get dropped are never the same. They have a very fragile spine because of the curvature of it.

  4. Step 4

Bunny's chew to taste, and they will chew on anything. So when they're hopping around the house, they must be watched all the time. If you cannot do this but still want your bunny to get exercise get a dog playpen, this will keep then contained and will still have enough room to move around. If you put the play pen outside, make sure it's half in the shade and half in the sun. Direct sunlight for bunny's is dangerous they don't do well with high heats, so they need to be able to get into shaded area if they need it.

  5. Step 5

Feeding your bunny is also very important make sure you keep them on the exact same thing as the breeder or the pet shop is feeding. Do not introduce new items until they are a little older. Each new item you do give them, make sure it's small amounts and watch for diarrhea. Diarrhea is a major threat to your bunny and will kill them, if diarrhea occurs take to the vets immediately.
