Save Money at the Grocery

The family budget uses the most discretionary income on groceries. Here are ways to stretch the income used on making groceries as sometimes things are dumped in the grocery cart that can stay on the shelves.

Do not take children with you as you grocery shop. They have probably been inundated with cereals and toy commercials while watching cartoons. Children will surely constantly be asking you for this gadget or that as they are impressionable. Their behavior may keep you from making intelligent decisions about your grocery shopping in an effort to quiet them or bring them to appeasement. It is best to leave the children home and grocery shop alone as you can be more focused on the grocery list which you should be shopping from. The grocery list will also keep you on the family budget in the use of the discretionary income.

Become the coupon carrier and become an expert at using the coupons on items that you usually purchase from the grocery store. If you use coupon just because of the saving without having any need for the product, you will be wasting your money. One coupon clipper had a garage full of unused goods only because of the savings. In the family’s effort to save money by using coupons, they were spending money on items that were not needed by the household. Use the coupons on already discounted goods so that you will receive extra savings at the grocery check out.

Frequent trips to the grocery store will have you picking up and buying items that you may already have in the cupboard or pantry. Also, the cost of gas can be greatly increased if you make frequent trips to the grocery. Either grocery shop once a week or once a month. Load up on items that usually do not last the week or the month such as milk and bread. A trip to the store for milk and bread can result in another grocery trip. You may spend more than you anticipated when you only needed milk and bread.
