With the emergence of Facebook and other social networking tools the line between home life and work life is getting burred. There continues to be a need to keep the pictures of the New Years party separate and away from those professional colleagues that are coming to your Facebook account to read your recent blog on microeconomics.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up to Facebook with two accounts

If you already have a personal account with your name, you will not want to lose your network so you will need another name for your professional account. Establish your professional facebook account with your professional title such as Esq. just after your last name.

  2. Step 2

Look at other professional networking sites

If you do not think that you need to be in Facebook for your professional networking because you do not have a need to connect with the companies that have Facebook accounts, move your professional networking to a site such as Linkedin.

  3. Step 3

Dont accept colleagues into your personal Facebook account

Remember, even if you have a friendly relationship with colleagues there may become a time when it is your job vs. their job or you both are up for a promotion together. You also may think that a colleague is your friend until weird rumors about your personal life begin to circlate at work and you realize it came from Facebook being misinterpreted or maliciously interpreted. Come up with a standard answer to ALL colleagues that write on your Facebook wall and want to friend you in Facebook. Give the same answer to everyone so that they will not be offenced. A standard answer can be, "I use my personal Facebook account for family and only my closest friends who I spend the weekends with, but please go to this Facebook/Linkedin/other social media site where I welcome a broader network of friends and colleagues.
