How to Help With Stroke Rehab

According to the Mayo Clinic, a stroke can cause a host of problems depending on what part of the brain was affected. These problems can include, paralysis or loss of muscle movement, problems talking or swallowing, memory loss and pain. Rehabilitating from a stroke is difficult and time consuming and a little help can go a long way.

Seek assistance from the proper professionals. Every stroke survivor undergoes a different rehabilitative process depending on the areas of the brain that were damaged and the extent of the damage. Rehabilitating a stroke survivor is not likely to be something you can do alone. Depending on the complications experienced by the stroke survivor, the rehabilitative process may include a rehabilitation doctor, nurse, dietitian, physical therapist, occupation therapist, recreational therapist, speech therapist, social worker and psychologist.

Find a stroke support group, either near you or online. Stroke support groups are generally made up of stroke survivors and their friends and family members. Joining a stroke support group can be beneficial for several reasons. A group provides access to a wealth of informative tips regarding rehabilitation. It can be a good source of inspiration. Stroke survivors and caregivers can socialize and make friends.

Explore free and low-cost treatment options. Rehabilitation can be financially draining. The American Stroke Association notes that treatment studies are frequently seeking qualifying volunteers. A searchable database of treatment studies can be found at the link provided below. Additionally, some universities may offer "graduate level" rehabilitative treatments under the supervision of professionals for free or at a fraction of the normal cost. Finally, depending on whether the stroke survivor qualifies, you may consider helping him or her apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). This can be done with or without a lawyer. However, many law schools offer free services to individuals who qualify financially. Information about the disability benefits program can be found at the link below.
