How to Give Flax Oil to Kids

Flaxseed oil, derived from the seeds of the flax plant, provides a combination of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. It's a source of protein and contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. A teaspoon of flax oil added to a child's diet can boost immune function and cardiovascular health, and relieve constipation and dry skin. Using flax oil to fry or saute is not advised because high heat will degrade its nutritional properties.

  1. Step 1

    Select a flax oil brand that is unrefined, refrigerated and has the date of processing clearly noted. Flax oil is usually stable for up to four months from the processing date.

  2. Step 2

    Always keep the flax oil in the refrigerator to prevent rapid rancidity. Rancid flax oil tastes bitter and smells like paint, and should be thrown out.

  3. Step 3

    Flax oil can be given to children directly from a teaspoon or added to their favorite foods.

  4. Step 4

    Add it to salad dressings or make a salad dressing using the oil. For a simple dressing, mix flax oil with olive oil in equal amounts.

  5. Step 5

    Mix with nut butters, add to cereals, shakes and dips, or use on pasta.

  • Check the flax oil weekly for rancidity.
  • Ground flaxseed has more nutritional value than flax oil.
