Whether you are growing hot or sweet peppers, you can give your plant a boost to grow more vigorously when you remove its first set of buds. Peppers are typically transplanted into the garden or containers when they are three to four inches high. At this stage, some plants may have set bud, or even have tiny little peppers forming. Pinch these away to direct the plant's energy into growing a healthy root system and strong stem to support large, tasty peppers later in the season.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine the pepper plant closely to find all the new and emerging buds. Separate the leaves to find buds that may be hidden amongst the foliage.

  2. Step 2

Grasp each bud or bud cluster between your thumbnail and forefinger at the point where it joins the pepper plant's stem. Pinch the bud off with a squeeze.

  3. Step 3

Discard all removed buds in the trash. Do not leave them to set on the soil surrounding the pepper plant where the decaying tissue may attract pests and disease.
