How to Replace the Ignition Switch in a Dodge Diesel

The ignition switch on a Dodge diesel is on the steering column. The switch and cylinder are one unit. You'll know when your switch has failed when you turn the ignition key to start the vehicle and not only does the vehicle not start but you don't even hear the usual clicking sound from the ignition switch assembly. If the battery is fully charged and the starter fuse is not blown, it's safe to assume the switch has failed. To replace the switch, you must remove the cylinder and the switch. On Dodge diesel vehicles, a retaining clip holds the switch in place on the back of the ignition cylinder.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put the ignition key into the ignition and turn it to the "II" position.

  2. Step 2

Remove the screws on the underside of the steering column cover, and pull the column cover down with your hands.

  3. Step 3

Slide the punch pin up into the small hole directly underneath the Dodge's ignition cylinder. This is the release tab access hole.

  4. Step 4

Push the pin all the way up into the hole while simultaneously pulling the ignition switch and cylinder out of the steering column.

  5. Step 5

Install the new switch. Place the key into the new ignition before installation, and make sure it is turned to the "II" position. Then slide the ignition switch into the steering column until it locks into position. Turn the key to the "Off" position.
